about

Every great punk band has an equally great origin story. And Seuss of Today certainly don’t disappoint on this front. A more typical punk band in their early days, the group found themselves in a Columbia, Missouri courtroom after a series of particularly rowdy gigs in the summer of 2012. Luckily their case was taken up by a rather progressive judge who took an interest in the boys and felt that they had quite a bit of untapped potential. Instead of sentencing them to jail time, the judge ordered the band to record a children’s album as a community service project. With one swift swing of a gavel, the course of underground punk rock was changed forever.

Renamed Seuss of Today, the boys found new energy in the writings of Theodor Geisel - better known as Dr. Seuss. Though they only lasted four months before guitarist Brian Who found himself in jail for real and singer Dave Who sold the band’s gear to fund his Xbox habit, their sub-one-minute politically-charged nursery rhyme rants sent shockwaves throughout the scene and turned the band into legends. Even today, tales of the band’s performances in ice cream shops, school gymnasiums, and city park pavilions send shivers down one’s spine.

The band’s recordings were never physically released - until now! This tape features all three Seuss of Today EPs from their glorious four month run in 2012 as well as a stunning previously unreleased dubbed-out take on “The Cat in the Hat.” Listening to all these recordings chronologically is a wild ride and shows that even over the course of four months, the band was evolving at a breakneck pace. By the end, they were growing tired of the limitations of hardcore and began experimenting with funk and reggae influences.

It’s a shame we were never able to see the full fruit of these experiments, but as the great Dr. Seuss once said - “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Seuss of Today may not have lasted long, but they happened.

-Steven Who, band manager
